TikTok overtakes Google as 2021 most visited website

TikTok topped Google as the most visited website of the year, remaining the world’s most popular domain even on Black Friday, according to a new study.

The short video-sharing platform, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, received more internet traffic than Google’s search engine, maps, translation services or Drive in 2021, according to internet traffic rankings from performance and web security company Cloudflare.

TikTok, which launched in 2016, initially gained mass global audiences with its viral dance and lip-syncing videos, but has grown into a hugely popular source of cooking, makeup, sports and entertainment content with more than a billion monthly active users worldwide.

While Instagram and Twitter tend to increase the number of existing celebrities, TikTok’s most followed creators are former strangers, having introduced American dancer Charli D’Amelio, Italian comedian Khaby Lame and Filipino singer Bella Poarch. .

The platform also ranked as the most popular social media domain, according to Cloudflare analysis, knocking 17-year-old Facebook from first place.

Facebook’s ranking fell to fourth place following its massive Oct. 4 outage, which affected its traffic rank for a full week, according to Cloudflare’s Radar service – the lowest on record for the company.

Google had effortlessly topped Cloudflare’s rankings between September and December 2020, when TikTok listed as the seventh or eighth most visited site.

TikTok first became the most popular site on February 17, 2021, falling back to number one in March and May, but it wasn’t until August that TikTok started to consistently take the lead.
