Valmet to provide key technology and automation for CMPC’s BioCMPC project in Brazil

Valmet and WACC finalized the agreement to which Valmet and CMPC signed a letter of intent in September 2021. Under the agreement, Valmet will provide key technology and automation for CMPC’s BioCMPC project. The objective is to modernize and increase the production capacity of line 2 of the Guaíba pulp mill from 1.5 million ADt / year (air-dried tonnes per year) to 1.85 million ADt /year. The modernized plant is expected to start operating in 4Q 2023. The value of the order is not disclosed.

The main objectives of the BioCMPC project are both to increase the sustainability of the pulp mill and to modernize the production technology. The project will include new environmental management and control measures throughout the plant. The project has been carefully designed, based on CMPC’s mission to sustainably produce and market premium quality wood, pulp, paper and tissue products that are competitive, add value and create opportunity. development for its employees and local communities.

The delivery of Valmet for the modernization of line 2 of the Guaíba pulp plant will include the reconstruction of the pulp drying plant, the fiber line, evaporation and white liquor, a new boiler of ash recovery and re-treatment, as well as an extensive distributed control system including advanced industrial internet functionality. The delivery of the technology is supported by spare parts packages.

Upgrading the pulp drying line will increase drying and baling capacity and performance with the same high operational safety requirements that still guide Valmet projects. The upgrade includes improvements to screening and drying, automatic tail threading, and an additional baling line.

Fiber line upgrade includes baking plant technology update, fiber line improvements in brown stock and after oxygen wash, and additional new bleaching step . The upgrade provides flexibility to minimize water consumption and effluent generation, thereby improving fiber line durability and environmental KPIs.

The recovery island modernization includes increasing the capacity of the recaustification and lime furnace, upgrading the eight-effect evaporation plant, a new high-power recovery boiler with electrostatic precipitators ( ESP) and ash treatment with Ash Leaching Duo technology. The modernization of the recovery island emphasizes high energy efficiency and low emissions. Plant odorous gas collection and management is further improved with NCG upgrades on process islands.

The automation delivery includes the Valmet DNA distribution control system, advanced process controls (APC) for selected process areas, analyzers and inline measurements.

Delivery is handled by the Valmet Industrial Internet (VII) service package with expert on-site and remote support. VII services include Valmet Performance Center support, data discovery, Dynamic Center Line Advisor, performance monitoring tools and operator training simulator.

CMPC produces and markets wood, pulp, packaging products, paper, fabrics and personal care products from certified plantations.
